John and I went up to his mom's house in Bay Harbor, MI for Memorial Day weekend. If you have never heard of Bay Harbor, don't worry, you aren't the only one. It is located in the most northern point of the Michigan finger (it's shaped like a hand lol). It is a beautiful area of the country on Lake Michigan. We always have a lovely time up there, especially escaping the Texas heat. Time up there normally consists of golfing, ping pong, bike riding, eating and drinking with family! However, this trip John indulged me in a different activity; we went ghost hunting one day!

If you don't know me, I am obsessed with the paranormal. I cannot get enough of Ghost Hunters...Jason Hawes if you ever read this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back the show! John is a sport and watches the shows with me and even encourages my obsession a bit :) A few months ago he bought me an EMF detector. Just in case, EMF stands for electromagnetic frequency. EMF meters detect electromagnetic energy in the area. When EMF is present the meter registers a reading. The strength of the reading depends on the strength of the frequency. Many paranormal investigators use EMF meters to detect a change in electromagnetic energy. These investigators take baseline environmental measurements in an allegedly haunted location. Then, throughout the course of the investigation, they watch for unexplained changes in the environmental data that appears to correspond with possible paranormal activity. The hypothesis being that a paranormal entity puts forth energy.

So, I bring this EMF detector with me almost everywhere…it’s normally in my handbag (nerd alert).

Ghost Hunters had investigated Mackinac Island in one episode. This is really close to Bay Harbor. Thus, I decided to google haunted areas and to my glee Petoskey (the town near by) had a couple of haunted locations! This town is adorable, looks like it is straight out of a Norman Rockwall painting. John and I had a lovely time walking around and shopping. Then we walk by The Perry Hotel. I jump and tell John that this is one of the supposedly haunted locations I had read about! He suggests we go in and have a drink at the bar.

As we walk in the hotel, I have my EMF detector turned on in hand in my Givenchy bag…I’m sure this was not as inconspicuous as I thought.

As we walked around the hotel, “admiring” the art and photos, I was actually sweeping to get a base line reading. It was exactly where you want it: at 0.

I had one spike as we passed some antique objects in a hallway which interested me. There are thoughts that certain objects can hold energy from the past.

While having a drink at the bar, I tell John the story of The Perry Hotel and some of the guests accounts of paranormal experience.

The Perry Hotel was built in 1899 and is said to be haunted by a woman who committed suicide in 1902. Due to her prominence, the staff has named her Doris. She is apparently often seen in the library. There’s even video surveillance of this glowing figure sitting in one of the chairs there! The accounts of guests and employees are numerous.

So what else is an amateur ghost hunter to do but go to the library!! We walk into the small library. I do a sweep of the room: no electromagnetic energy. I stand near the window and all of a sudden the detector spikes to 20. John is a bit more skeptical than myself, so I had him the detector to keep an eye on it. We stand in the middle of the room and I start to ask questions. “Are you happy here at the hotel?” The detector stays at 0. “Did you commit suicide here?” The detector spiked to 20. “Can you come closer to the detector? It wont hurt you. It will just let us know you are here.” The detector spiked to 30. “Thank you, could you do that one more time?” It spiked

again to 40. I then asked for another sign but the room was quiet. So John and I left.

Whether or not I interacted with a real ghost I can’t be certain but I will say it was a “para”normal experience. And definitely made my day!
